To Derek/Dad... We had a very strange and orthodox relationship you and I. But the last few months of getting a chance to reconnect with you and talk with you before you passed really made things easier in my mind and my opinion on you change. I’m glad we got to talk and getting to show you the mountains in Alberta was a really great feeling. You seemed so proud on the phone and I knew you where happy with who I’ve become. Grandma would tell me all the time how excited you got when I would call or come by. I’m glad I was able to be there for you in the end. I’m sorry it took so long for me to come around. Thanks for being a good dad and for never giving up. You’ll always hold a place in my heart and you’ll truly be missed. Love u Nolan.

There is a saying that suggests "Life imitates Art far more than Art imitates Life." (Oscar Wilde) I believe not only does life imitate art, but life imitates a higher form of art, sport. Derek was a natural athlete and his abilities impressed, especially for his true love and passion, baseball. His slender frame and weight belied his unexpected and surprising long ball, home run power. Reflecting on Derek's life, it is easy to draw parallels to baseball, it's stretches of lows and highs, the emotional and dramatic walk off home runs, perfectly timed stolen bases and strikeouts. During Derek's early life, he was able to regularly hit above his weight and knock the ball out of the park. During the last three years, life pitched him many nasty curve balls and his ability to consistently homer waned. Every plate appearance spawned hope but the pitches came faster and were more difficult to read and defend. His athletic abilities, undeniable strength, courage and hope allowed him to continue to produce unexpected triples, doubles and singles all while facing staggering odds. On May 30th, 2021, two beautiful synchronic wonders merged, in extra innings as Derek took his best shot swinging and struck out, he earned a well deserved position on the All Star team. Derek's courage at 'the plate' has inspired and amazed all of us. Rest in Peace our Most Valuable Player Love Uncle Chris, Aunt Maria, Brenna, Tom, Ryerson, Rome, Christopher and Justine

On behalf of Erin and I and the kids, we are very sorry to hear of Derek's passing and extend our condolences to the family. Doug and I have fun memories of Derek at Ivor Chandler School, and also Brent and Shannon. I really enjoyed coaching t-ball with Derek and having Nolan on that team. Derek was a great coach and Jack and I both really appreciated him. Sincerely, Dave Ferguson

I am so sorry for your loss Tanya. It seems like yesterday enjoying life with Neil. I think of him often and hope Derek and Neil have met up once again. I think it's like a ship setting sail with everyone saying goodbye, yet landing on a distant shore where everyone is waiting to welcome you.
