Obituary of Alexander Ferguson Smith

Wednesday April 8, 2020 a loving husband, father and Poppa passed away at the age of 81. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Alex immigrated to Canada in 1957 where his family settled in Windsor, Ontario. Beloved husband of almost 58 years to Carol Ann Rabideau. Loving father of Sandra (Brent Smith) Cynthia (Ray Turner) Susan (Ray Brazeau) Daniel (Tracey Smith). Cherished Poppa of Craig and Brett Turner, Shane and Mitchell Smith, Bailey, Cameron and Zachary Brazeau and Jessica and Katie Smith. Dear brother of Nancy, Charles, George, Gail, predeceased by his parents Alexander Ferguson Smith Sr. and Agnes (Higgins) Smith and also sisters , Margaret and Iris . Alex was a funny, lovable man who always made the people around him smile; that accent, that small stutter when he got excited, the way he would laugh at himself and the extreme pride he had in his children and grandchildren endeared him to all of us.. He could always be seen putzing in his yard or poking around the pond wearing his comfortable checkered lumber jacket. Whether it was making stained glass ornaments, birdhouses, collecting pine cones and trying to attract songbirds such as the elusive Purple Martins, he enjoyed his time with Mother Nature immensely ! He tried so hard to get those Purple Martins to nest at his home but they had other ideas. The family will forever cherish fond memories of the chicken coop, camping, happy sleepovers with his grandchildren and holiday gatherings. And, most enjoyable to him Alex's ability to work all day in his backyard sanctuary and accomplish absolutely nothing! "Dad, you were a great man and you will be sorrowfully missed by all of us and you will never ever , ever, be forgotten. We were so happy that we were able to get a Piper to guide you to the heavens, just the way you DESERVE." A small service has taken place until his the rest of his children are allowed to travel from Alberta and British Columbia and the entire family can pay their respects as a “Clan” ! In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation if you wish, to the Windsor-Essex County Humane Society. Alex will be laid to rest at Heavenly Rest Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to SIMPLE CHOICE (Dougall) 519-254-2585. Online condolences and cherished memories may be shared with the family at www.simplechoicecremation.ca.
