I have to say, I know I am truly blessed to have had so many years with my grandmother. At 98 years old, Betty Chevalier has lived a full and rich life, full of love and family. My early memories are filled with things like big family dinners on New Years Day, being scared of sleeping in the spare room, colouring books in the desk, the telephone in the bathroom, lol, yard sales, and of course the ever full dish of hard candy stuck together in the living room. As I grew up Grandma was a constant in my life. Coming up to her house in the city was always such an adventure, especially when I was old enough to go all the way to Tecumseh Road. It also usually meant time to hang with my cousins. You could always count on Gram to tell it straight, and let’s be honest, sometimes she could be brutally blunt but that is also what made her such a good sounding board and advisor. I was so proud to bring my children there to meet their GiGi, and their visits always brought her such joy. I wish I knew more about her younger years and what made her such a strong independent woman. Born in 1924 into a big family with 5 sisters and their baby brother, I know they struggled through the depression, I remember recording an interview with her about it for school, I wish I still had that. I know she loved baseball, and often reminisced about it with me while reliving her childhood memories through the looking glass that was Alzheimer’s . She met my grandfather Alfred ‘Chev’ Chevalier, married and had two children, my mother Mary-Lynne and her younger brother Larry. The four grandchildren, Marty, Brian, Tricia and myself gave her four great-children. She stayed fit and healthy her whole life and worked part-time well into her 70’s. She was an amazing woman, wife, mother and grandmother and big influence in my life. I hope she is now at peace in the loving arms of her husband and with her family that has gone before her. Love and miss you Marty
