Obituary of Sheila Keet

Written by Sheila's little sister, Shirley Landry "I lost my big sister on Dec.3rd,2020. I could not be with her, for her final hours...because of an ugly virus that has disrupted so many lives and families. Covid did not kill her, but it prevented me from flying out and being with her for her final hours, being there to support her 2 daughters. I am angry at Covid and sad for our loss. People need to realize that Covid has tentacles, that has crept into so many people's lives...killing loved ones, destroying businesses, keeping families apart, changing childrens lives during their formative years. Hug your families, focus on them. Do not be cavalier about your "rights and freedoms" to go mask-less or attend parties. I do not want to hear it anymore...I am angry at you and Covid and those who dispute its affects on our lives... This tribute is for my brilliant sister, Sheila H. Keet., a Nurse, a Lawyer, an adventurer, an animal lover, a Spiritual being, a Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Sister in Law...and most importantly...lived life on her own terms. She fought for causes, for injustices, for the overlooked people of the world...she taught me compassion for those in need. She taught me to help her pick up a homeless, First Nations man, who lay frozen to the ground, on the streets of Edmonton. She taught me to fight for his survival and dignity ...to call the Police for help and stand up to them, when they mocked him and to insist they help him. They did...Sheila was a tenacious force of nature to be reckoned with...to help people in need. I always wished I could be as strong as her, as fearless as her. This is about her life...not the Dementia that stole her thoughts, memories and speech. Not about the demons she fought, from an imperfect childhood. This is about Sheila H.Keet SHEILA KEET *Grew up in Alberta *Skipped 2 grades and graduated High School at 16 *Went right into Nursing School and became a Psychiatric Registered Nurse by 18. *Went on to Northern Nursing in Whitehorse and Yellowknife *Became the Director of Mental Health in Yellowknife, then the Executive Director of the Native Womens Association *Decided to switch careers in the mid 80's and went to Law School in Windsor, Ontario *Eventually opened her own Law Practice: Sheila Keet Family Law *Retired in 2014 *Always led an active life: Ran Marathons..she was particularly proud of finishing the Paris Marathon Kayaked several summers in remote Alaska Travelled through the outback's of Australia *Travelled to Northern Ireland, to see the after affects of the religious unrest there *Travelled to New Orleans to see the devastating post hurricane city Sheila had 2 beautiful daughters, Jodi and Tami. 3 wonderful Grandkids, Alicia, Jillian, Matthew (all in Windsor, Ontario) Life wasn't always easy for her...difficult upbringing, alcohol addiction, from a battered childhood...but she was always my hero, my beautiful, brilliant, talented, brave big sister..who I worshipped.
