I remember asking Doug one time, "How do things look to you thru those blue eyes?" and he said, "Everything is crystal clear."

Doug had been in the hospital for weeks before I was able to visit him in early August. There didn’t seem to be a tv in the room or any access to music. I knew he loved music, so I set my Spotify to a song that I knew he loved - Um um um um um um – his eyes widened and he spoke clearly saying, “That’s Major Lance!” I spent that afternoon playing songs by Little Anthony and the Imperials, Al Jarreau, and a few others. I now remember that on a roadtrip to Quebec, when our niece was being baptized and we stood up to be her godparents, how much he enjoyed the cd of a musician I was interested at the time - Eros Ramazzotti. I would have liked for him to recall that trip just by listening to some of Eros’ hits.
Doug wanted me to bring him grapes and oranges. The next day, I brought Doug, some soda, grapes, and oranges and for the next few days I carefully supplemented his meals of mush with those little tastes of fruit he was used to.
Doug also liked sports, especially baseball and when I discovered he did in fact have a tv in his room (I thought it was a monitor), I set that up and he was able to enjoy all the baseball games he wanted to via Sportsnet. His eyes stayed focused on that tv for remaining days of my visit with him only turning away from it to sip on a soda, or to enjoy the grapes that I offered him.
By the time I left Doug to travel back home, I didn’t say good-bye or see you in October. I just hugged him and said, “I love you and keep up the good work!” And Doug said, “I will!”
