Obituary of Zoltan Veres

Zoltan Veres passed into Eternal Grace at Huron Lodge on Sunday June 4, 2023, in his 94th year. Dad / grandpa was predeceased by his parents, Louis and Esther Veres, his dear brother, Lou (2002), and his beloved daughter, Julie (2019). Dad was also predeceased by first wife, Joy, 2014, and by his second wife, Elizabeth, in 2020. Zoltan is survived by his loving children, Valerie, Tamara, Stephen, their spouses, children, grandchildren, Julie's spouse, Don, and Elizabeth's children, Emery and Susan, their spouses, and their children, and by numerous relatives in Slovakia, former Hungary. Dad was an elementary school teacher, principal, and ultimately the Superintendent of Special Services for the [then] Windsor Board of Education, prior to his retirement in 1991. He was also a principal in Burlington, Ontario. Dad's profound love of music was a delight for him, and others, through his long life. He was a noted baritone soloist both at Glenwood United Church and at other places of worship, and he was a paid soloist in his youth, in Detroit. Dad was also a talented violinist, and rarely missed opportunities to delight listeners with his renditions of Hungarian melodies. Dad's latter life was focused upon Windsor's Hungarian cultural community, as well as connected to the Free Hungarian Reformed Church. He embraced his Magyar roots: the music, food, dance, and, through Dad's written work, celebrated and urged the maintenance of Hungarian cultural heritage, both in Windsor/ Detroit, and beyond. Dad was very proudly the President of the Windsor Hungarian Cultural Centre/ Mindszenty Hall for nearly thirty years. Dad's life was made better in his final year through the caring interventions of physicians and nurses, PSWs and staff at Metropolitan Hospital and in private practice, as well as at the Windsor Regional Cancer Center. Profound gratitude is offered to the dedicated staff at Huron Lodge who embraced and cared for our charismatic dad. Similar gratitude to J. Veres, L. Fields for their numerous supports and kindnesses. May our Dad and Grandpa rest in peace, while his legacy, both human and cultural, continues to flourish. There will be a Celebration of Life at Mindszenty Hall, 790 Hanna Street East, on Sunday, June 25, 2023. Visitation beginning at 2, followed by celebration In Situ. In lieu of flowers - donations would be appreciated to charity of choice. Arrangements entrusted to SIMPLE CHOICE (Dougall) 519-254-2585.
