I have known Karen Hughes but the last three years of her life For all that time she was a resident in a Nursing home I was a volunteer who visited her I am now 78 years old and retired I worked as. clinical psychologist for over 50 years In my career I have had many teachers and guides Karen Hughes turned out to be a teacher and guide She was elderly, totally blind but fully alive At the end she was confined to a wheel chair and suffered much pain She has gone but she continues to teach me She started teaching me the first moment I saw her The lesson of living life to the full, regardless of circumstance She taught me about faith in a loving and merciful God Faith in a God present, grand, yet intimate She taught me about hope, both present and future She taught me about family and how to display constant and unconditional love for them She taught me about humour and how to laugh Not at others but at myself, my weaknesses and imperfections She taught me about perseverance and never giving up Yet, knowing when to change directions and focus She taught me about her suffering and how it was used for redemption For herself and so many others who she deemed worse off than she She taught me the power of love and respect for self and other How to be present to self and the other She taught me to fully live the moment And to enjoy all that is around me She taught me how powerful silence and meditation can be She taught me how to live yet also how to die I gratefully continue to be her student And she will continue to be present in my life Thankyou for these gifts Karen
