Obituary of Jean Eleanor Shillington

SHILLINGTON, Jean Eleanor Resident of Windsor and Bayfield, died on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at her home in Windsor, as she wished, after a short illness. Her cocker spaniels, Buster and Missy, were close by. Jean was born, raised, and educated in London, Ontario. Her parents were Muriel and Alan Shillington. She was an honour graduate in 1951 of The University of Western Ontario in mathematics and physics, where she was a member of the Women's Athletic Association, the U.S.C., and Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Jean participated on Inter-University Sports Teams. She attended the Ontario College of Education and began her teaching career in Oakville. W.N. Ball, principal of Walkerville Collegiate Institute in Windsor, Ontario, recruited Jean to come to his school in 1955 to teach and to coach the girls' volleyball and basketball teams. Eventually, she was transferred to The Honourable WC. Kennedy Collegiate Institute, where she taught mathematics until she retired in 1988. Jean was always dedicated to her students and gave selflessly of her own time after regular school hours. A life-long athlete, Jean excelled in so many sports because she practiced, practiced, practiced until she mastered the skills of the sport. She was one of the first women to be able to do a lay-up shot in basketball. Jean played all-star softball, basketball, golf, and lawn bowling. She skied, swam, and for many years until quite recently, she curled as a member of Beach Grove Golf & Country Club. Jean was with the Naval Reserve Unit at H.M.C.S. Hunter. Jean is survived by her sister, Margery Sherrett, of London, Ontario, her niece Beth and nephew John, and her brother Edward (Ted) Shillington, of Toronto. Cremation has taken place. Memorial donations in Jean's name may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, for use in the Windsor Chapter Office, and to The Arthritis Society, Ontario Division, for the Windsor Chapter Office.
