My sincere condolences to Diane and all his family. As a grade 8 student at St. Francis I remember when he read ‘Black Like Me’ by John Howard Griffin to our class. It was a time of racial unrest in Detroit and he helped us understand the harm of prejudice. He raised our awareness about the evolving and empathetic cause of Social Justice and his legacy of faith, to walk ‘The Way’ each day in love and kindness is a treasure that I can trace back to those days sitting and listening to his words of wisdom.

Di, Carole, Lisa, David and your families,
Our hearts and thoughts are with you and we are deeply saddened by Bill’s passing. He was a kind and generous friend and always the first to offer help and support, no matter the project or need.
We value the memory of time spent with him in gatherings, playing wallyball and card nights. His good humour and laughter echo on.
The universe has lost a lovely, caring, and engaging man.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr.Labute
When I started at Brennan in 1994, I didn’t know anyone cause I was supposed to go to Assumption. Mr. Labute came to my grade school to deliver me the welcoming package that Brennan gave to all their students. He also took me on a private tour of the Brennan after school ended so I wouldn't be overwhelmed. When school started, he was always checking up on me to make sure I was adjusting well and making friends. Cheers to you Mr.Labute and May You Rest In Peace and Fly High with the Angels until we meet again.
Sincerely
Isabella Caragea

Mr Labute was my teacher and counsellor at FJ Brennan. He was caring and always made you feel welcomed and supported. I will always remember his sense of humour and kind nature. I still remember assignments from his class, they were lively and interactive. His help with career/university planning was based on his guidance in grade thirteen. I now get to teach with his daughter, Lisa, who also has the same demeanour as her dad. He will be missed dearly. My sympathy to Lisa and her entire family.

Bill you were a very special man, whom always shared your gifts. As teacher, I admired your calm caring disposition with students and staff. You had a gentle spirit that never altered. As a friend you always had kind words. Last time I got to see you, hugs were flowing and looked at as a gift. Memories of you will always be cherished and smiles of driving past you on your roller blades on Tecumseh road will always leave a smile on my face. Your life made an impact on so many people.
Bill we will miss you. Please fly in heaven with no pain and know you were one of a kind. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
My love and thoughts for Diane, Carole, Lisa , Paul, families and grandchildren.

The Labute family owes a debt of gratitude to Bill for his work on the Labute family tree. His work was the basis for the Labute family tree on Ancestry which he co-edited with me. This tree has over 8000 people compiled over the last 14 years. He did a lot of research on the the Chene family that came to Montreal and eventually settled in Detroit at the beginning of the 18-th century, Pierre Chene dit Saint-Onge initially coming with Cadillac in 1701. His son, Pierre Chene dit LaButte, married Marie-Madeleine Roy whose mother was a Miami Indian. All members of the Labute family are descendants of their only son Pierre. All of Bill's research can be found on the Labute family tree on ancestry.ca.

As a student in my Grade 13 Botany class, whenever Bill raised his hand, he could always be counted on to bring some humour to an otherwise very dry subject and to lighten up my first year teaching.
In a lesson dealing with maple keys and how these seeds were used by the trees to propagate:
Bill: Did you hear about the mother maple tree say to the mother elm that she was so afraid her son was going to go out and make an ash of himself !?!
Bill’s humour will always live in our hearts. ❤️

I was very sad to hear of Bill's passing at church today . I was very young when my Mom married his Uncle Adrian. We eventually moved next door to them and Aunt Yvonne and Uncle Gui were so very kind to us all . Bill was a bit older but I looked up to him . And was thrilled to reunite with him at our church ,he did several yard sales to raise money at his daughters , and I loved him , with the fondness you have for a cousin . Praying for you this evening . Wish I'd come to say goodbye . God bless you .

My condolences to the LaBute family. I had the privilege to be one of Mr. LaBute's students at Brennan in the early 80's. He made every student feel special and taught us all to love at least one thing about ourselves while telling us his own personal stories. My favourite, and most memorable, was regarding the adoption of their 2nd child. The love and patience shown to a little girl who was tentative/uncertain that she'd be not only loved and accepted, but as loved and accepted as her baby sister. RIP Mr. LaBute...you are already so very missed.
